Korowai Mentoring is a one-on-one, tikanga-based programme designed to support young people in the Youth Justice system. Our mission is to reduce reoffending by helping young people restore their personal mana and strengthen their cultural identity, setting them on a path toward positive change.
About the Programme
Who We Support
This 12-week programme is designed for rangatahi (male and female) aged 14–17 years who are required to complete their Family Group Conference (FGC) or Court orders. While we primarily focus on supporting rangatahi of Māori descent, we also welcome young people from other backgrounds who could benefit from a culturally grounded mentoring approach.
Programme Details
Korowai Mentoring provides daily guidance and mentorship, operating Monday to Friday, 09:00 AM – 3:00 PM. We offer transportation, ensuring rangatahi are collected and returned to their bail address each day. Upon completion, rangatahi are celebrated in a graduation ceremony, where their progress is acknowledged by key stakeholders.
At the conclusion of the Korowai Mentoring programme, a discharge report and exit form are submitted to Oranga Tamariki, including an evaluation section for social workers to assess the overall impact of the mentoring experience.
Programme Activities and Mentorship
Each rangatahi is paired with one of our dedicated youth workers, who collaborates with their whānau and referrer to develop a personalised plan.
